[STUDENT] I’ve been in retail pretty much all my life. I’m actually currently enrolled in the Retail Management Certificate program through my employer, Safeway. I’ve been with them for 12 years. They really understand that furthering my education is going to make me just a better asset, so I thought, why not, maybe there’s something I don’t know or something that I can gain from the text or gain from the instructor. In retail the sky is the limit, and there’s always new positions where another window might open in my career. [INSTRUCTOR] Management is about building relationships. I think the best managers know how to listen. The Retail Business Management Program is 100% online, and it’s self-paced. What that means is that there’s a start date and there’s an end date within the quarter, and what you do in between those dates are 100% up to you. I have designed this program for working adults. My average student is 36 years old, so I have to think about mothers and fathers and people who own businesses and people who work in retail with funky schedules. [STUDENT] The flexibility is incredible as long as I kind of set a goal. I never know how my day for the most part will go. With kids, there’s no set schedules. I have two children: I have a five-year-old who is in kindergarten right now, and trying to show her that school is important. And it doesn’t matter how old you are or how busy life can get, there’s always time for your education. [INSTRUCTOR] I think this program is set up to where people will find themselves as well as finding their career. The assignments that I’m asking you to do are going to be things that I’ve gone through. I have roughly 21 years of retail experience, and I’m looking for your personal outlook on how you’re going to handle those situations because I’ve been there. [STUDENT] It’s not just something that he did, it’s something that he loves, and I think that really comes across in the way he has his courses built, in the way he communicates with you as a student. [INSTRUCTOR] I love just seeing people get promoted. I take a lot of pride in students learning not only what I’m trying to teach them business-wise, but also in their personal life. [STUDENT] We’re all here for the same reason, learn something, further your education, meet new people, have new experiences, and then see where life takes you after that. As we get older I think we really start to envision where we want to go and what we want to be. I feel I can take this knowledge and I can execute whatever’s put in front of me.
