Greenville businesses prepare for decision on Imperial site

GREENVILLE… THE ANTICPATION MOUNTS AHEAD OF TOMORROW NIGHT’S CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSION ON THE IMPERICAL SITE IN UPTOWN GREENVILLE. NINE ON YOUR SIDE’S DOMINIQUE MOODY SPOKE WITH BUSINESS OWNERS AND JOINS US TO EXPLAIN WHAT IT COULD MEAN FOR THE CITY. DOMINIQUE? – ANGIE…IT’S AN ISSUE THAT DATES BACK UNTIL THE EARLY 2000’S… WHERE THE IMPERIAL TOBACCO COMPANY WAS THE MAIN HUB FOR THE CITY. AND REVITALIZATION EFFORTS HAVEN’T STOPPED SINCE. BUSINESS OWNERS TELL ME IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SITE CAN ONLY HELP BRING MORE BUSINESSES TO THE AREA. “any construction that they do, in the uptown area is going to be great for business.” IF YOU DIDN’T ALREADY KNOW, UPTOWN IS BOOMING… “you can’t find a parking space within blocks, so another dorm or another living space or another business that’s build up is a fantastic idea for the city.” ON ANY GIVEN DAY…YOU CAN SEE SMASHED WAFFLES EMPLOYEES BUSY AT WORK “the construction workers, they like waffles and that’s what we sell.” BOB LICARI IS THE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AT SMASHED WAFFLES. LICARI ISN’T AFRAID TO SEE WHAT IMPACT THE IMPERIAL SITE CAN HAVE ON DICKSION AVENUE. “we’re already seeing…look at all the construction we have already…we’re kind of used to it in uptown but we’re looking forward to the results at the end of it.” THE DECISION ON WHAT TO DO WITH THE SITE STILL LINGERS FOR CITY COUNCIL… AND WITH THE DISCUSSION IN TOMORROW’S MEETING, IT CAN BE CRITICAL FOR THE FUTURE OF UPTOWN. AND THE BUSINESS OWNERS IN UPTOWN, ARE READY FOR A DECISION. “part of it is really wanting to see some diversity in the offerings…you know a lot of the trends is been with the student housing…and that’s great to get people living down town, but we need more people housing options for a variety of people.” BETWEEN STUDENT HOUSING, ANOTHER BUSINESS OR A POTENTIAL OFFICE COMPONENT, IT’S HARD TO CHOOSE. “there’s a lot of you know, potential in that site being developed as far as being an anchor for uhhh…people to come into this area.” FOR ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF RENTENTION AND EXPANSION IN PITT COUNTY, BRAD HUFFORD, THE DECISION IS GREAT FOR BUSINESSES EITHER WAY. “kind of creates diversity amongst the offerings that are available in Uptown Greenville.” – ACCORDING TO THE DEVELOPMENT FINANCE INITIATIVE, MORE THAN 50 DEVELOPERS WERE CONTACTED ABOUT THE SITE. AND OUT OF THOSE 50, THREE DEVELOPERS RESPONDED TO THE REQUEST. IN TOMORROW NIGHT’S MEETING, THE COUNCIL WILL DECIDE ON WHICH DEVELOPER IF ANY THEY WILL APPROVE. DOMINIQUE MOODY, NINE ON YOUR SIDE. TODAY, GOVERNOR
